About SLA & Uptime

A Service Level Agreement (SLA) is a commitment between a service provider and a client. A key component of an SLA is the uptime guarantee, which specifies the percentage of time a service is expected to be operational. This calculator helps translate abstract percentages like "99.9% uptime" into tangible periods of allowed downtime.

The "Nines" of Availability

  • 99% (Two Nines): Allows for about 3.65 days of downtime per year. Generally considered poor for modern applications.
  • 99.9% (Three Nines): Allows for 8.77 hours of downtime per year. A common standard for many services.
  • 99.99% (Four Nines): Allows for 52.6 minutes of downtime per year. A high standard, often requiring automated recovery and redundancy.
  • 99.999% (Five Nines): Allows for just 5.26 minutes of downtime per year. The gold standard for high-availability systems, typically found in critical infrastructure like telecommunications.
